Guitar FX Layouts: Colorsound Overdriver

Used all 2n2222a's. Found some BC184C's at Radio Elco and I'm tracking down BC169C's so I can experiment a bit with those. I'm working on improving my wiring skills when boxing up, some of the wiring in this build is simply too long.

During a rehearsal the bass player of Stage Banter asked if we could keep our eyes open for second hand Darkglass stuff. So I checked it out on the interwebs and saw that they have effects too. The B3K has been verofied so I decided to try my luck with it as it is a step up from a simple booster, drive or fuzz.

Small build, focused on the wiring. But found out that wiring the ground of the pot to the 3PDT didn't work, so I had to connect it to the DC connector afterwards. Also noticed that it's hard to get those cheap Chinese resistors with their flimsy leads neatly aligned. And I'm not satisfied with the overall layout, the pot could be positioned a bit higher. And then the LED, I need to work on wiring those…

This one caught my attention because of the mosfet parts (CA3240EZ, BS170). Good challenge to fit it in a 1590B with four pots and a switch. That was bound to go wrong of course.

An effect from the 10 series, also known as the MT10. This was the very first effect I ever bought and it is still my main overdrive. Back in 1989 nobody was really interested in yet another overdrive/distortion so few were made, nowadays a clean MT10 starts at €250 because apparently half of Nashville is using these. They're easy to clone, Aion offers a

Guitar FX Layouts: Earthquaker Devices Acapulco Gold

Built this for my brother-in-law who plays in Feast. Accidentally used a JRC386BD for the first amplification stage so it's probably even louder and more doom. Build looks OK, bit sloppy because I had to finish it fast and I couldn't fully pop in the JRC386BD somehow. And I'm not very happy about the jumpers underneath the IC sockets, they got in the way to properly position those sockets. Added an extra vol…

Stumbled upon this one on the Guitar FX Layouts forum. I already built a Ram's Head and an OpAmp Muff from GGG and thought this one would be a nice addition. Used 2N7000 MOSFET's.

Really like the tonestack of this fuzz, you can dial in a great deal of different tones. The Guitar FX Layouts forum thread reports this effect could be prone to oscillation but I haven't run into that issue so far.

Guitar FX Layouts: Rangemaster with switchable input caps

Had a Lorlin rotary switch lying around and I wanted to build a Rangemaster. On the gutshot you can see a AF109 PNP Germanium transistor that I used for testing. For now I ended up with an AC132. With this build I tried to improve my wiring skills. Looks a bit better but the input wiring is now too short.

<https://tagboardeffects.blogspot.com/2012/06/way-huge-red-llama.html>

The CD4049UBE based fuzz. I think it's a fuzz, it's not a transparent overdrive and the sound of a broken speaker is not really distortion like if you ask me. Simple build, worked before I boxed it. It didn't after having it boxed, when switching it on it was dead silent. Turned out to be a bad solder joint on the 3PDT switch, the diagonal jumper.

An NPN Silicon version of the renown Tone Bender Fuzz. Very cool effect to fool around with for testing different transistors. When I made the gutshot it had BC183L's in it. Just for the fun of it. It's really quite cool when it starts to oscillate with such high hFE transistors. I've replaced them with a 60 hFE 2n2369 for Q1, a 40hfE AC187K for Q2 and a 90 hFE 2n2369 for Q3.

A PT2399 based echo/delay. This one was for my daughter so she could play around with it with her mic and karaoke set. It had to be baby blue with a unicorn on it. Also experimented with coloring the vero a bit. Translucent knobs, a blue led as the eye of the unicorn, design turned out quite nice. On the inside it's crammed as you can see so not really happy about that.
