EPCOS

Whenever you see a blue box cap on a build it's probably an EPCOS MKT metallized polyester capacitor. The company is German, just like Wima, but production facilities can be found all over the world. It's currently owned by TDK.

Kemet

The Kemet R82 series is widely used in DIY builds as they are cheap and easy to get, especially in the EU. They're easy to recognize as they are plain white with the values printed in black on top of the box. These box caps used to be made by Arcotronics, an Italian company, but they were acquired by Kemet in 2007.

Electrolytics

The Panasonic FC series seem to be favored among builders. You can recognize them by their royal blue color with golden band. They are also available in SMD form factor.

Screw mount caps

When restoring older amplifiers you almost always have to replace the power filtering capacitors. Chances are the chassis sports these beautiful big screw mount capacitors, also referred to as cans (in Dutch: bekerelco's). But where to get those? Well,

Tropical Fish is the nickname for Mullard metalised polyester capacitors. The nickname stems from the colored bands on the capacitors that designate value, voltage and tolerance. Mullard was owned by Philips since 1927 and Philips stopped using the Mullard brand name around 1988. So I reckon these capacitors pre-date 1988.

Wima film capacitors are generally considered good quality so you encounter them a lot in DIY and professional builds. MKP2 and MKS2 seem to be favored.
